(i really do love Theron, i swear! he’s an entertaining and compelling character, it’s just… sometimes he needs a good whack on the head. or saberpike through the heart, as the case may be. but it’ll all work out in the end!!)

Confessor

23 ATC // Odessen

Theron Shan awakens to the sterile stench of kolto and an ache in his chest like a star destroyer has rammed him in the sternum. His senses are dulled by what can only be high-grade painkillers, and a rhythmic beeping echoes from somewhere nearby. Heart monitor, his subconscious supplies helpfully. That means a hospital. Or med bay.

Well. He isn’t dead, at least.

Movement flickers at the edge of his vision, and he glances over to see a blonde blur seated by his cot. Hope surges in his chest, masking the pain for one shining moment.

    “Ciemra?”

“Not quite,” comes the clipped Imperial-accented reply.

“Where-?” He struggles to sit up, collapsing with a gasp as pain lances through his ribcage.

“Odessen, you imbecile.” The Commander sighs. “I’d stay put if I were you. Aetona and I spent eight hours knitting your chest back together and if you tear it open now I have half a mind to let you bleed out.”

Theron groans miserably. “Where… is she?”

“As far as my dear sister is concerned, you won’t wake up for another day. And don’t worry,” she adds with a vicious smile, “Verie doesn’t know you’re here either. A mutual acquaintance is masking your presence.”

He winces, squeezing his eyes shut. “Why…?”

Luzia barks out a laugh. “Let’s start from the top, shall we?” She leans forward in her seat, eyes burning molten gold. “You shot my wife. You left her and my sister, the mother of your child, in a crashing train. You abandoned your daughter to seven months of loneliness and misery while Ciemra struggled to explain why daddy isn’t coming home. You enabled the destruction of the Gravestone and the Eternal Fleet, accomplishing Atrius’ goal for him even as he died. Did I miss anything?”

“Only meant…” he breaks off into a coughing fit. “Only meant to protect them.”

“So you’ve said. And for what it’s worth, Ciemra has taken you at your word.” Luzia clasps her hands, static crackling over her rigid knuckles. “But I don’t believe you.”

Theron’s heart rate spikes, beeping wildly on the bedside monitor. “Please…”

“Don’t you worry. I must be going soft, because I’ll give you one chance to explain yourself.” She leans back in her seat. “Tell me everything, from the very beginning. Leave nothing out. Give me a damned good reason to ever let you see my sister and niece again.”

Theron nods, grimacing. “Okay,” he croaks. “Okay. It started after the mission to Dantooine…”
